How We Rank

Most "best of" lists throw 15 or 20 options at you and call it a day. If you are after a recommendation for a dog bed, you should not have to read a novel to find it.

Seven covers three budgets and the main use cases, and it is tight enough that every product on the list has to earn its place. If something does not stack up, it does not make the cut.

Every category starts wide and narrows by rules, not by whim:

1. The whole shelf. Three searches of amazon.com.au, three pages each, read as a signed-out shopper. Every result goes into the pool, sponsored or not, well-reviewed or not, so a brand sold from Australia with a modest review count is not lost behind an importer with thousands.
2. Verified through Amazon's API.The pool is checked against Amazon's own product data: current price, stock, who wins the buy box, condition, brand, department and the listing's own feature list.
3. The Sydney buy box. Listings are read with the delivery postcode set to Sydney 2000. A rural postcode hides real offers on about one in five healthy listings, so a Sydney view is the one that reflects what most Australians can buy.
4. Sold from Australia.A pick is marked as shipping from Australia only when the buy-box seller is Amazon AU. At most two of the seven may be sold by Amazon's UK, US or German stores. A category with fewer than five credible locally sold products is not built.
5. Pet Supplies only.The listing has to sit in Amazon's Pet Supplies department. Items Amazon files under health or beauty are excluded, whatever they are called on the box.
6. Brands that answer the phone. The top tiers favour brands with an Australian presence and warranty. Marketplace brands belong in the Budget tier, where the price is the point.

We do not buy or test the products. AI tools compile the research above, read the published specifications, Australian and international reviews and the pattern of owner feedback on Amazon AU, and draft the rankings and the editorial. No newsroom reads each page before it goes live. Instead, automated routines verify every price, ASIN and availability claim against the live Amazon AU listing before publication and again every day, and pull a product the moment it can no longer be bought. Each product is scored on five category-specific dimensions out of 10, and the dimensions are written before a single product is looked at, because what matters for a dog bed has nothing to do with what matters for a litter box.

• Dog beds: support, washability, chew resistance, size range and value.
• Cat litter boxes: odour control, ease of cleaning, entry and size, litter containment and value.
• Dog GPS trackers: location accuracy, battery life, coverage and subscription cost, build and fit, and value.

Here is what the scale means:

• 9 to 10: Outstanding. Best in class. Sets the benchmark for the category.
• 7 to 8: Very good. Genuinely impressive with only minor shortcomings.
• 5 to 6: Decent. Gets the job done but nothing to write home about.
• Below 5. Notable weaknesses. Products scoring this low do not make our lists.

Every dimension is weighted equally, and the Top7 Score on each card is the plain average. The tick marks on each score bar show the category average, so a 9.3 reads as how far above the pack a pick sits rather than as a bare number.

The question most pet product pages fail to answer is the one every buyer has: will it fit my dog. So the introduction and the buying guide on each category page start with sizing, in centimetres and kilograms, for the breeds Australians actually own: cavoodles, staffies, kelpies, border collies, greyhounds and the rest. The calculators on the site do the same arithmetic for crates, harnesses and collars.

Not everyone has the same budget, and the most expensive option is not always the right one. That is why the seven are split into three tiers:

• Premium. The no-compromise picks. Top dollar, top performance, and in this vertical often the products that lift the ticket: self-cleaning litter boxes, furniture-style crates, treat cameras.
• Best Value. The sweet spot. These punch above their weight and balance performance against price. For most people this is where we would point you first.
• Budget. The best bang for your buck. Solid performance without the premium price, and where the marketplace brands belong.

A 9 out of 10 bed at $350 and a 7 out of 10 bed at $80 serve completely different needs. The tiers exist so you find the right product for your dog, not just the best one on paper.

• Dog and cat food, supplements, and flea, tick and worm treatments. Health belongs with your vet.
• Shock, prong and citronella bark collars. Welfare law on aversive collars differs by state, and the RSPCA advises against them; this site will never be the reason someone buys one.
• Pet insurance, and the smart-home gear that belongs to our sister site top7.au: robot vacuums, pet-hair vacuums and indoor security cameras. We link across instead.

• Prices updated daily.Every day the current price, stock and product image for every pick come straight from Amazon's API. If a deal drops or a price jumps, you see it within 24 hours, and a price we can no longer stand behind is replaced by a plain link rather than a stale number.
• Rankings reviewed weekly. Every week each category is audited for products that have gone out of stock, been superseded or lost their Australian seller. A product that cannot be bought is swapped out.

Every page shows when it was last reviewed, and the sign-off strip at the bottom of every page carries the date the prices were last verified.

No brand, manufacturer or retailer pays for placement on our lists. The rankings come from the research described above and nothing else. We do not accept sponsored placements, paid reviews or gifted products, and every pick carries honest pros and cons. If owners report a zip that fails or a fountain pump that whines, we say so.
