About top7pets.au

top7pets.au ranks the gear Australian dogs and cats actually use: beds, harnesses, crates, cat trees, litter boxes, feeders, fountains, trackers, cameras, clippers and cooling mats. Every category ends in seven picks, split into Premium, Best Value and Budget, with prices in Australian dollars and sizes in centimetres and kilograms.
The site exists because the Australian answer to "which dog bed" is mostly brand shops, overseas lists in inches and pounds, and forum threads. None of them tells you which crate a cavoodle grows into, which harness fits a staffy's chest or whether a self-cleaning litter box copes with two cats. Sizing is the question every pet product page dodges, so it is the first thing each of our category pages answers.
We do not buy or test the products. Each category starts with the whole Amazon Australia shelf, read the way a Sydney shopper sees it, verified through Amazon's own product API, and narrowed by published specifications, Australian and international reviews and the pattern of owner feedback on Amazon AU. The research and drafting are AI-assisted. Automated routines check every price, ASIN and availability claim against the live listing before publication and again every day, and Jaco Olwagen, who runs the site, writes the rules those routines follow and is responsible for what they publish. No brand pays for placement.
Who runs top7pets.au
top7pets.au is built and run by Jaco Olwagen, an independent publisher in Hat Head on the NSW Mid North Coast. It sits in the top7 family alongside top7.au for tech, top7tools.au for power tools, top7kitchen.au for kitchen appliances and top7stays.au for NSW coast stays, all run by the same person. Jaco writes the ranking rules, maintains the automated checks that run every day, and is responsible for everything published here. There is no editorial team behind the name. If something on the site is wrong, say so: the contact details below reach the person who can fix it.
Why a whippet
The character on this page is Scout, a whippet. On the other top7 sites the character is a satin bowerbird, the native that collects the best blue things it can find and arranges them for judgement. A pet site needed a dog with the matching job, and a sighthound has it: a whippet runs the whole field fast and brings back only what matters. Seven things, in this case.
Scoutis a cartoon, deliberately. There is no real dog behind the drawings and no product photographed with one, so nothing on the site pretends to be first-hand testing that never happened. The colours are the site's: ink for the body, a fawn chest, and a collar in the ochre that marks every link and heading here.
The rules the picks follow
- Every pick must be buyable on Amazon Australia today, from the buy box a Sydney shopper sees. At most two of the seven may be sold by Amazon's UK, US or German stores; the rest are sold from Australia.
- Every pick must sit in Amazon's Pet Supplies department. Grooming and health-adjacent items that Amazon files elsewhere are left out.
- Sizing comes first. Sizes are given in centimetres and kilograms for the breeds Australians own, and where sizing or welfare is involved the guidance of the RSPCA and the Australian Veterinary Association is cited.
- Some things are never ranked: dog and cat food, supplements, flea, tick and worm treatments, pet insurance, and shock, prong or citronella bark collars. Welfare law on aversive collars differs by state, and this site will not be the reason someone buys one.
How We Earn Revenue
top7pets.au is a participant in the Amazon Associates Program. When you click a product link on our site and make a purchase on amazon.com.au, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.
That relationship does not influence the rankings. Products are scored on merit, and every pick carries genuine pros and cons, including the things we do not love, because honest recommendations are the only kind worth making.
